THIS ITINERARY WOULD BE PERFECT FOR THOSE TRAVELERS WHO HAVE GOT JUST FEW DAYS FOR A TRIP TO BEYOND THE ARCTIC CIRCLE AND ARE KEEN TO DISCOVER THE BEAUTY OF THE RUSSIAN ARCTIC IN A COUPLE OF DAYS. The tour starts in Murmansk, the capital of the Russian Arctic and the largest Arctic city in the world. It's not a difficult task to get to Murmansk – there are flights from Moscow and St.Petersburg as well as from other Russian cities, but also there are comfortable everyday trains that link Murmansk with Moscow and St.Petersburg. A train journey from St.Petersburg would take about 24 hours and those who travel from Moscow would spend 2 nights and 1 day on the train.
This first morning we start early and head to Teriberka (130 km from Murmansk), to that most famous edge of the Earth that attracts so many visitors from all over the world and that in 2016 became one of the 20th most popular world travel destinations according to National Geographic.
Russian artist and traveler Nikolay Roerich wrote in his diary: “If you think the North is gloomy you don’t know the North”. One day at Teriberka might provide the perfect proof of this statement; in winter you can see wonderful pinky sunrises, in autumn – breathtaking golden tundra. Even at night it is dramatically bright here when the northern lights are blazing!
It takes about 2 hours to get to Teriberka by vehicle, but those 2 hours will fly by as the landscapes outside are breathtaking and unbelievable – rocky tundra interspersed with smooth lakes and then the lakes alternate with tundra again.
At the arrival to Teriberka we start to explore this incredible place! First you will see the Ship graveyard located right at the entrance to the village where the remains of old wooden ships and boats rest. They lie on the shore and in shallow water – a reminder of the recent history and great fishing past of Teriberka.
After you explore the village, at the other side of Teriberka you will find the so-called “beach with dragon eggs” which is one of the main sights of the region. It has various names, but all of them are linked with dragons and dinosaurs. And this isn’t surprising – the sea shore is covered with huge snow-white round stones up to 1,5 meters in diameter.
Then there‘s the waterfall at Small Battery lake, one of the most picturesque waterfalls on Kola peninsula.
From here you get the most incredible views of the ocean up to the skyline. Beyond this there is only the North Pole! If you are lucky you can spot whales from this point – the main inhabitants of the Barencevo sea. If you have binoculars do not forget to take them with you.
Lunch will be organized in one of Teriberka’s restaurants. Cafes and restaurants here are almost always full, because Arctic cuisine has become a significant culinary brand. Seafood from Teriberka is served in the most expensive and famous restaurants of Moscow and St.Petersburg. Here would be the best place to try fresh sea urchins, scallops, halibut and arctic cod.
At the end of the day we drive back to Murmansk or to its outskirts depending on the accommodation that has been chosen. You might choose to stay in a nice hotel in Murmansk or alternatively you could choose glamping outside the city or even to spend the night in a hotel in Teriberka and to return to Murmansk the next morning.
After breakfast and check out we take you on a city tour of Murmansk. You will see the most significant city sights as well as get to know something of the everyday life of the locals.
The city tour includes a visit to Murmansk’s central square “5 corners”, the main street named after Lenin, the Lighthouse memorial, Alyosha monument, the Cabin of the Kursk submarine as well as a visit to the main city church of the Savior on the Waters and into the first Russian nuclear icebreaker ‘Lenin’ which is located in the Sea port of Murmansk.
Lunch will be organized in the city center.
After lunch we offer you a visit to the Animal park where you can see Siberian Husky dogs and Reindeer. Here you can also see the traditional Sami dwelling – the ‘Chum’, find out about Sami games, sports, traditions, everyday life and try traditional Northern tea with Sami pastry.
In the evening we say goodbye to Murmansk and the Russian Arctic.
